What Constitutes Kona Coffee?

Mark Twain wasn't referring to Kona coffee as it is known now when he made his comments about it. He tried a cup of coffee from the Brazilian Typica plant that Chief Boki had brought to Oahu in 1825 while he was there. The coffee made from these Typica beans is delicious.

However, the former is still available. In Hawaii, Guatemalan Typica trees predominate. Red Caturra trees were introduced to Kona orchards in the 1960s, and Bourbon plants have since been planted on farms. While some growers only Guatemalan Typica, others mix different Arabica coffees in their plantations. All the beans in mixed orchards grind together and go through the same roasting process, but this is not a drawback.

The Typica trees produce sweet, mellow, and low-acid coffee since they are different types of Arabica coffees.

It can be difficult to locate pure Guatemalan Typica coffee in supermarkets due to the blending of different Typica beans. However, Kona Typica from the same farms and Arabica blends are highly prized for their delicate undertones.
